Brain Damage- 1987 Frank Henenlotter

Brain Damage is about a guy named Brian who comes in contact with a blue snake like parasite named Aylmer. Aylmer attaches himself to Brian’s neck and injects him with an unknown drug that gives Brian very satisfying hallucinations. In exchange for the drug Brian must help Aylmer kill other people so he can feed on their brains. Eventually Brian tries to quit his addiction but his efforts are fruitless and he comes back to Aylmer.

I cannot stress enough how great this movie really is. It has humor, gore and a wonderfully strange plot. There are numerous memorable scenes especially one involving Brian literally losing his mind. The parasite Aylmer is hilarious and steals the show. The scenes of Brian hallucinating are filled with vibrant colors and are very well done. However there is one thing in particular about this movie that makes it stand out from others in its category it has a real message. Although the movie is disgusting and violent it carries an anti-drug message through the whole thing. It shows the stages of an addict from the pleasurable first experience to the miserable withdrawal stages and also relapse. It also comments on the lengths that addicts will go to support their addiction and get high.

I highly recommend this movie and suggest that if you have not seen it do your best to find a copy its really worth it.

Frat House

Frat House is a documentary film created by Todd Phillips and Andrew Gurland that exposes the abusive dark side of college fraternities. the film begins by following the Beta Chi Fraternity at the State University of New York College in Oneonta New york. After following Beta Chi for a while the fraternity decides they no longer want to be filmed and threaten the filmmakers and crew to leave the campus immediately. After a violent encounter with a Beta Chi brother they realize the reality of the threat and leave. Aventually a fraternity at a different school agrees to have their hazing rituals filmed but the school and fraternity must not be named and Todd and Andrew must participate in the rituals.

Anyway you look at it this is a disturbing film. Regardless of whether some of the hazing rituals were staged or faked the filmmakers still participated in them to be allowed full access to film the rituals. Not only were the hazing rituals disturbing but the attitudes of the fraternity brothers were especially shocking. They seemed to enjoy the violence and humiliation of the pledges. One brother in particular Blossom was especially disturbing. During the film he describes several of the hazing rituals and states that his favorite is biting the heads off of rats. Although the film depicts many brutal hazing acts I'm certain that other fraternities engage in hazing rituals 100x worse than what is seen in Frat House.

The Reasons behind the film being banned from HBO are still unclear. Some sources say that it was never aired due to complaints from parents about their sons in the film being intoxicated and that the film would ruin their lives There are also accusations that parts of the film were staged and fraternity brothers were paid to act as pledges and create hazing rituals.Nonetheless this is a shocking glimpse of fraternity life and their hazing rituals.
